On June 17 at 4 p.m. SAST, the inhabitants of Soweto, South Africa, will have the opportunity to experience New Orleans culture firsthand at the Macanudo Restaurant. A Taste of New Orleans: After Hours – Music & Food is a new mega-concert and food festival working in conjunction with the inaugural Soweto International Jazz Festival to expose unknown audiences to the sights, sounds and smells of New Orleans.
The event is a new project from Neville House Enterprises and Yvette Summers Productions. Following the theme of “good music and good vibes,” the event will showcase a variety of the city’s most celebrated musicians and dishes, including wondrous amounts of red beans and rice.
The festival aims to shed light on the city’s musical tradition in a historic context. New Orleans is widely known as the birthplace of jazz, but it has been a key region in the development of many other genres of American music, including funk, hip-hop and rhythm and blues.
New Orleans natives and Grammy winners Cyril Neville and Irvin Mayfield will headline the slate of local musicians set to perform at the South African festival. Following up Neville and Mayfield is a lineup of mostly local musicians playing New Orleans-inspired jams. This year’s lineup includes vocalists Gaynielle Neville, Omari Neville, Dumpstaphunk, Yvette Summers, Norman Caesar, Joy Clark and South Africa’s own Ernie Smith. Several other surprise guests will also be in attendance.
