Go Be Free, the debut album from rising blues star Sonny Gullage was released yesterday. This 12-song collection, produced by the legendary four-time Grammy winner Tom Hambridge, takes listeners on a modern blues odyssey with its blend of traditional blues, gospel and R&B influences.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Kevin “Sonny” Gullage wrote his first song at the age of 12 about the environmental and economic devastation caused by the BP Oil Spill. Produced by Tom Hambridge, known for his work with Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and Susan Tedeschi, Go Be Free also features a fiery guest appearance by fellow blues prodigy Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. The two musicians, both 25, share a deep connection to the blues.
Sonny also draws on his family’s rich musical heritage throughout the album. His father, bassist Tony Gullage, has performed with blues and roots legends like Henry Butler and Dr. John, while his grandmother, Sister Alberta Gullage, released gospel records in the 1960s. Additionally, Sonny’s family surname was originally Ledbetter, linking him to the seminal blues/folk legend Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter.
Before launching his solo career, Sonny earned his stripes as an artist in residence at B.B. King’s Blues Club in New Orleans. When the pandemic shut down live performances, Sonny took a leap of faith by trying out for American Idol, where he advanced to the Showstoppers round. Since then, he has toured extensively, captivating audiences across the U.S. and Europe.
In addition to his musical achievements, Sonny has composed music for film and podcasts and made appearances in movies like The Last Laugh and Burning Cane. His voice was also featured in the 2019 release of Disney’s Lady & The Tramp.
With Go Be Free, Sonny Gullage aspires to release a debut that not only honors the blues tradition but also pushes it forward into new, exciting territory. The album is available now on Blind Pig Records.
