For more than 30 years, Ellis Marsalis, Jr. performed weekly at the Snug Harbor, one of New Orleans’ premier live jazz clubs. In January 2020, the famed musician retired from the residency and now, to pay homage to Marsalis — who died earlier this month after suffering complications due to COVID-19 — the venue is offering fans an opportunity to relive his legendary Friday night performances and pay tribute to the late icon.
Beginning this Friday, April 10, Snug Harbor will host live stream tribute concerts to Ellis Marsalis. This week’s performer is David Torkanowsky, and folks can tune in every week from the Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro Facebook and Instagram accounts at 8 p.m. local time to watch.
The weekly “E Day” tribute concerts are inspired in part by the warmth received by Snug Harbor when the venue posted a video to social media, in which Ellis Marsalis’ music could be heard being played from the venue’s balcony, enveloping an empty Frenchmen Street in New Orleans. The music was being played at 8 p.m., during what was the jazz giant’s usual set time before he retired. The loss of Marsalis, coupled with the completely vacant Frenchmen Street, made the video clip particularly moving.
