A variety of performance disciplines–from live music and comedy to sideshow, burlesque and drag–will be celebrated when the second annual Snake Oil Festival takes over the Howlin’ Wolf in New Orleans from June 24 to 26.
The festival will welcome internationally renowned performers like Coney Island sideshow impresario Donny Vomit, Portland, OR burlesque artist, belly dancer and musician Karolina Lux, sideshow historian James Taylor, world touring impalement artist Marlo Marquisé, and many more.
Altogether, over 50 artists will capture the spirit of the traveling medicine shows of old during the event, which will also feature live music from Dr. Sick and the Asylum Chorus. These artists will take the stage over the course of three shows: Friday’s “Carnival at the Crossroads,” Saturday’s “Hoochie Coochie Babylon” and Sunday’s “Unholy Roller Revival”).
In addition to the evening performances, there will be daytime workshops on burlesque, stage development, belly dancing and sideshow arts, along with a class on New Orleans bounce dancing with Big Freedia dancer Heather Loop and a lecture from Taylor.
Snake Oil Festival is the brainchild of co-producers Little Luna and Ben Wisdom, two of the most distinguished names in the New Orleans neo-vaudeville scene. Luna is a tarrot card reader and former burlesque performer, while Wisdom produces/emcees the Slow Burn Burlesque Show and starred in the 2011 documentary film Save Our Souls.
“The Snake Oil Festival pays homage to the humble grassroots beginnings of our modern day entertainment landscape,” Luna explains. “Many legendary stars emerged from this landscape. The traveling medicine show may have given way to television but the old fashioned template of how to entertain people is still very relevant, and of course the sometimes shocking attitude and flamboyancy of our particular brand of Snake Oil, adds a 21st century flair.”
Tickets for the evening shows are now on sale, and a full workshop schedule can be found here.
