The Essence Festival cameras were rolling when the New Orleans-based nonprofit, Girls Play Trumpets Too (GPTT), received a heartwarming surprise during their weekly Saturday program at St. Charles Ave. Baptist Church. The Silver Fox Squad, a distinguished group of older gentlemen and influencers known for their striking grey beards, made an unexpected appearance, bringing excitement and support to the young musicians.
The Silver Fox Squad uses their influence to raise funds during their appearances, donating to organizations like Girls Play Trumpets Too. Their mission is to educate and inspire other men while motivating people worldwide through the power of lifestyle and creative fashion.
Girls Play Trumpets Too empowers girls ages 8-18 to develop leadership skills, break down gender biases, build musical fundamentals, foster social entrepreneurship and increase empathy and joy to uplift their communities. The nonprofit also welcomed influential Black women visitors, all PhD holders, including the owner of the first Black winery in Georgia.
Since its inception in November 2022 with just ten girls, GPTT has grown tremendously, now boasting 80 young girls enrolled in Saturday and after-school programs across New Orleans and Donaldsonville, LA. Their remarkable accomplishments have garnered attention from the Kelly Clarkson Show, Justin Timberlake and various local and national donors. At least 20 participants consistently perform at prominent festivals and private events throughout the year, showcasing their impressive growth and talent.
