OffBeat Event Pick:
Shaolin Jazz: The 37th Chamber Listening Party + Multi-Media Art Installation
On Friday, March 1, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at RFRSH Gerald Watson and his partner in crime, DJ 2-Tone Jones will be hosting a listening party and art installation for their mash-up album, Shaolin Jazz—The 37th Chamber.
While the concept of the mash-up is nothing new, mash-ups represent an opportunity to experience music in a different context. DJs blend rhythm, breaks, and even fully orchestrated songs together not just to create new sounds, but to revitalize old ones by commenting on or re-contextualizing passages or even entire pieces.
Much like DJ BC’s Wu Orleans, The 37th Chamber brings Wu-Tang vocals together with jazz tracks to create a new appreciation of each, but unlike Wu Orleans, this record steers clear of more obvious Dixieland jazz, instead opting for a more sophisticated melding of jazz tracks and breaks both familiar and obscure.
The album itself, available here, is well worth the (free) download and brings new sounds to the ear with each listen. This event is perfect for anyone who enjoys both Wu-Tang and Jazz, and even those who enjoy only one or the other might find it surprisingly enjoyable
This Friday’s event will mark Shaolin Jazz’s second visit to New Orleans, following up on their v.1 of last year with this season’s touring multi-media experience. The listening party is FREE with RSVP to [email protected].
