Local indie rock group Sweet Crude will headline Tipitina’s this Friday, August 28th as part of the venue’s Foundation Free Fridays.
The seven band members (also known around town for their involvement with Alexis and the Samurai, Glasgow!, and other projects) write lyrics in both English and Cajun French. They’ve gleaned an enthusiastic South Louisiana following during their two years together, partly because of their dedication to revitalizing the region’s traditional language via “drum-driven indie pop.”
Said primary lyricist Sam Craft in a statement, “We want to show that the language is still alive and kicking, and that it sounds great in any genre. Our grandparents learned French, but our parents never really communicated with it, so now I feel it’s on the youth to preserve the tradition. It’s wonderful that there are so many Cajun bands singing in Louisiana, and we wanted to do the same thing but with our original music.”
They’ve just returned from a Canadian tour and have eight festival gigs booked around Louisiana and Mississippi for this fall.
What’s more, they are also preparing to make their first full-length album. They’ve launched a kickstarter campaign with a goal of $20,000. Visit their page here to make a donation.
