At 6 p.m. on June 15, the Second Line Arts Collective will host the final concert of their Sanaa Music Workshop at the New Orleans Jazz Market. The Friday night performance will conclude the two-week camp geared towards aspiring musicians ages 14 to 19.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day since June 4, swaths of young local musicians have honed the craft under the supervision of certified counselors. Through the camp’s values of hard work, focus and dedication, the determined group of teens have prepared tirelessly for the final performance.
The Sanaa Music Workshop is not just your summer band practice. Through its diverse programming, the camp intends to equip young creatives with the tools necessary to succeed in a competitive and ever-changing music industry. The Second Line Arts Collective, the non-profit organization who organizes the program, pushes the curriculum beyond solely developing an artist’s craft and technique; it helps to shape the entrepreneurial artist of today.
Over the course of two weeks, the camp offers numerous classes that cover all aspects of today’s industry, including social media, marketing and branding in addition to performance. The camp also provides a variety of guest lecturers from every sector of the industry, which even included OffBeat editor-in-chief Jan Ramsey among this year’s speakers.
The concert is free and open to the public, and family and friends are encouraged to attend. Final concerts also continue the next day, June 16, at 11 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m
