Scene by Rhys, a fine art gallery located in the heart of the French Quarter, will celebrate its 3rd anniversary on Nov. 8 and 9, when the gallery invites guests to enjoy music and light fare in the courtyard and to view the art on display.
The event will feature a performance by Tuba Skinny, a local band that started in 2009 and focuses on performing traditional New Orleans jazz. Recently, Tuba Skinny released its album Some Kind-A-Shake in June to critical acclaim. Tuba Skinny will perform on Nov. 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Leroy Jones Quintet, led by the famous jazz trumpeter from whom the band derives its name, will also perform. However, Jones–who, among a myriad of other accomplishments, toured with Harry Connick Jr. for years–and his wife, trombonist Katja Toivola, will not be performing on Nov. 9 due to unexpected circumstances. Instead, the lineup will include Wendell Brunius (trumpet and vocals), Christian Winther (clarinet and saxophone), Detroit Brooks (guitar), Jason Stewart (bass) and Barnaby Gold (drums). The quintet will perform from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On both nights, Emilie Rhys, who crafts pen and ink drawings of live performances throughout the various festivals and venues of New Orleans, will be present, drafting art pieces that depict each band as they perform.
The Scene by Rhys art gallery is located at 708 Toulouse St. For more information about the gallery or the event, visit the gallery’s website, here.
