Satchmo SummerFest will move back to the Old U.S. Mint when it returns August 4-6. The annual festival relocated to Jackson Square last year, but after reviewing the results and attendee feedback it has decided to return to its old location.
“As we celebrate the Festival’s 17th anniversary – and Louis Armstrong’s birthday – we are thrilled to return to the Mint. The newly opened Jazz Museum will help us pay homage to Satchmo, plus shade tents and onsite, air-conditioned bathrooms will keep fans comfortable,” said Emily Madero, President & CEO of French Quarter Festivals, Inc., the organization that produces Satchmo SummerFest.
Last year’s festival featured performances by Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Bill Summers & Jazalsa, Kermit Ruffins, Brass-a-holics and many more. This year’s bill is still in the works, but will include performances by over 100 artists representing New Orleans’ brass band and jazz output. Musicians who are interested in performing are encouraged to apply until the deadline comes on May 31.
Founded in 2001, Satchmo SummerFest celebrates the life, legacy and music of Louis Armstrong, whose birthday coincides with the event. The celebration charges a very reasonable $5 for admission.
