Satchmo SummerFest, the annual summer music festival celebrating the life and legacy of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, will take place in 2020, albeit in a very different way from years past. Due to the ongoing pandemic and the citywide prohibition on large gatherings, this year’s event will happen online over the course of an entire week, beginning July 27 and running through August 2.

Seven Days of Satch is produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) and presented by Chevron. Musical performers include James Andrews, John Boutté, Wendell Brunious, Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony, Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns, Herlin Riley, Treme Brass Band, and Tuba Skinny. Performances are filmed onsite and will be aired on the Jazz Museum’s Facebook Live August 1 and August 2. Cooking demos featuring Louis Armstrong-inspired dishes will air on WWL-TV’s “Morning Show” July 27-30.

This year marks what would have been the 20th anniversary of Satchmo SummerFest, which traditionally celebrates music and features cuisine and educational programming at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Back in May, organizers announced the cancellation of this year’s festival, citing public health concerns.

Described as a “multiplatform, virtual celebration,” the historic online event is a partnership between FQFI, New Orleans National Jazz Historical Park, WWOZ, WWL-TV, and New Orleans Jazz Museum.

“Seven Days of Satch will be a celebration of the music, life and legacy of Louis Armstrong and is part of Chevron’s commitment to the community,” said Leah Brown, Public Affairs Manager for Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico Business Unit. “We’re hopeful that the virtual event – and these amazing Crescent City musicians – will not only reach locals, but also inspire a new generation of jazz fans across the country and around the world.  Chevron is proud to be a part of it.”
