While he may have an airport and park named after him, nothing comes as close to honoring the memory of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong as Satchmo SummerFest—the traditional jazz festival held each August on the grounds of the Old U.S. Mint.
This year, the 12th-annual SummerFest takes place on August 3-5, featuring food, free seminars and music, including traditional and contemporary jazz as well as brass bands and children’s programming. To help make sure the musicians are compensated properly, Satchmo SummerFest is currently seeking sponsors for its 2012 programming, in which patrons may elect to “adopt an artist” and enjoy the benefits of sponsorship as well as a tax deductible contribution. Sponsors may choose to contribute at one of five sponsorship levels. These range from the $750 “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” level, which provides for co-sponsorship of a trio or quartet, to the $10,000-$20,000 “Pops” sponsorship, which underwrites an entire day of music at the festival.
While sponsorship includes recognition by the festival in marketing, promotional materials and festival signage, patrons are also encouraged to participate as much as they’d like individually through privileges such as introducing “their” band onstage, or hanging banners during their sponsored act’s set. Previous Satchmo SummerFest performers have included such notables as the Rebirth Brass Band, Soul Rebels, Treme Brass Band, Tim Laughlin, and other top-notch jazz players.
