Applications for the 2016 Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp, which will be held at Loyola University from June 27 to July 15, are now being accepted.
The program, founded in 1995, will welcome Albert “Tootie” Heath as its artist-in-residence. The 80 year-old jazz drummer who worked with many of the greats, the likes of John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Yusef Lateef. He will be joined by a team of local music educators.
“This is one of the most unique experiences a young musician can encounter,” said Jackie Harris, Founder and Executive Director of the summer camp in a press release. “Students will participate in programs that center on refining musical skills, including composition, voice, and even swing dancing.”
The summer camp counts in its alumni roster a wide variety of local talents, with artists like Shamarr Allen, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, Jon Batiste, Christian Scott, Gregory Agid, Joe Dyson, Calvin Johnson, Khris Royal and many others.
Auditions will be held at Loyola on June 14 & June 15. Criterias for registrants include being between ages 10 and 21, being actively involved in a music education program, having studied music for a minimum of 2 years and more.
