This Friday, internationally renowned vibraphonist and composer Thomas van der Geld will rejoin Loyola University professor of music and jazz pianist Sanford Hinderlie on stage. The unique pairing is part of the Loyola Presents concert series and serves as an introduction, of sorts, to a forthcoming album the duo will record in New Orleans this summer. April 20’s performance with Hinderlie will mark the latest in a series of performances the two have already done in cities across Austria and Germany and will feature original compositions, both new and existing works from the 40-plus years each has contributed to the world of jazz.
Van der Geld has lived in Europe since 1974, where he’s made his mark as a staple at jazz festivals in cities like Montreaux, Berlin and elsewhere. A past collaborator with the likes of Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Charlie Mariano, Manfred Schoof, Luis de Mateo, Eduard Vesala, Barre Philips, Albert Mangelsdorf, Keith Copeland, Mel Lewis, Bob Brookmeyer, Peter Herbolzheimer and Bill Connors, he’ll be back in New Orleans where he has recorded works in the past for the city’s STR Digital Records (of which Hinderlie is president). With his group Children at Play, van der Geld recorded four albums for German label ECM/JAPO and has commissioned numerous works for stage and film.
Hinderlie and van der Geld will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018 in Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall at Loyola’s main campus, 6363 St. Charles Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
