The annual New Orleans Running of the Bulls (San Fermin in Nueva Orleans) is a distinctly alternative experience compared to its Spanish counterpart. On Saturday, July 15, a large gathering of locals will assemble in the streets of the Central Business District, wearing white attire with red sashes and bandanas.
For over 17 years, an annual horde of over 100 roller derby skaters, predominantly female, will emerge from behind the vast pack of runners. These skaters, hailing from various parts of the United States, will have horned helmets (they’re the “bulls”) and toy baseball bats as they chase down more than 14,000 locals (presumably holding a drink).
The El Txupinazo pre-party kicks off on Friday, July 14, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a performance from Cha-Wa at The Howlin’ Wolf, located at 907 S. Peters St. Admission fee is $15. The official Running of the Bulls takes place Saturday, July 15. The event begins at 8 a.m. after the runners receive their blessing promptly at 7:55 a.m. The post-run celebration continues until noon at The Howlin’ Wolf, featuring Rebirth Brass Band and Boyfriend performances. The admission fee is $20, while VIP admission costs $100 and includes access to an open bar and air-conditioned facilities.
The Running of the Bulls route starts at The Howlin’ Wolf, proceeds downtown, turns left on Poydras Street, left on Magazine Street, and finally left on St. Joseph Street, concluding at the starting point.
