On Saturday, October 28 late filmmaker Royce Osborn was remembered through a celebratory send-off, Halloween style. Originally slated for October 8, the ceremony was delayed due to the threat of Hurricane Nate but the creator of All on a Mardi Gras Day received his proper due. The Royce Osborn Memorial began at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, where a screening of his award-winning documentary was joined by tributes from musical performers and speakers. Folks eventually began a procession to Congo Square where Luther Gray, Jamilah Peters-Muhammed, Ausettua Amor Amenkum and many members of the Mardi Gras Indian nation, Skull & Bones gangs and and Baby Dolls led family, friends and fans in continued remembrance and celebration.
Photographer Kim Welsh was in attendance and provided OffBeat with some footage from the event, which you can see below. Rest in power, Royce!
