Royal Street galleries and shops welcome visitors for Dirty Linen Night

On Saturday, August 13, galleries and shops along Royal Street will host Dirty Linen Night, an annual event celebrating the retailers of the French Quarter and their clientele. Born as a satirical play on White Linen Night, which is held annually on the first Saturday of August in the Warehouse Arts District, Dirty Linen Night invites visitors to stroll through the Vieux Carré as musicians line the streets in a festive block party atmosphere.

Organizers insist that for Dirty Linen Night, patrons should grab “dirty linens” from the week before, worn while exploring Julia Street‘s art galleries—no need to do laundry in between.

Now in its 19th year, Dirty Linen Night is helmed by the Royal Street Arts District, a non-profit organization that provides area businesses the opportunity to promote themselves, encourage people to come to the gallery district in the French Quarter, and to have some fun. Though perhaps less bacchanalian than Bourbon Street, the 300-1100 block of Royal definitely draws a crowd looking for a good time.

Around 25 galleries and shops are participating this year between the 300 and 1100 blocks of Royal Street. For $20, visitors can purchase a Dirty Linen Night wristband, which bundles access to all galleries plus wine, beer, and specialty drinks. Otherwise, all are welcome to come and go as they please—it is the French Quarter after all.
