The Royal Southern Brotherhood played like their careers depended on it, leaving a mark and a buzz that is still ringing around Harrisonburg, Virginia. Near James Madison University in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, the Clementine Cafe is a small club that regularly features small to mid-level acts. Earlier this summer, at Michael Arnone’s Crawfish Festival in New Jersey, the RSB met several local-area high school students. Before the gig, bassist Charlie Wooten visited the school and caught up with the group as they were taking a break during marching band practice. Later, when singer and guitarist Devon Allman learned that the kids would miss a large majority of the concert due to a football game, he delayed the RSB’s start time for half an hour. As you might image, the crowd embraced the gesture, and the grooves flowed aplenty. Following the show, Wooton jammed with several of the kids for more than two hours, giving them a musical lesson and a life experience they’ll certainly not forget.
