Jourdan Thibodeaux Et Les Rôdailleurs and the Roots of Fire documentary will be celebrated at The Broadside in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the “Roots of Fire Celebration.” The event will occur on Saturday, May 27, from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m.
Roots of Fire is a series highlighting Louisiana roots music’s rich heritage. It consists of various components, including a feature-length documentary called Roots of Fire that focuses on Cajun artists, a short documentary called California Creole featuring accordion prodigy Andre Thierry, bite-sized interviews with different artists, and live recordings of performances by renowned musicians like Lil Nate, Pine Leaf Boys, Feufollet, T’Monde, and Bonsoir, Catin.
The project’s primary goal is to capture stories from the world of South Louisiana roots music and share them with audiences beyond the state, aiming to generate greater interest in Cajun and Zydeco music. While the first documentary, Roots of Fire, introduces Louisiana French music, there are plans for future films that will explore the Creole side of Zydeco music.
Initially, the project focused on exploring the influence of ethnicity in Louisiana French music, particularly the intersection and divergence between Cajun and Zydeco music, as well as the impact of racial history and Native American contributions to the genre. However, the documentary does not attempt to be an authoritative work on Cajun music. Instead, it offers an authentic and entertaining glimpse into the Cajun music scene around Lafayette, Louisiana. Featuring talented and inspiring artists, the film introduces Cajun music, emphasizing the unique power of live musical experiences.
The “Roots of Fire Celebration” will include music, storytelling, and a celebration of Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage in roots music. Tickets are available on The Broadside‘s website for $20.
