Renowned New Orleans bassist, singer, songwriter, and producer Roland Guerin is making waves with his latest EP, introducing fans to the captivating world of Prog:Funk. Following the success of his Burl Audio Song of the Year-winning single “28 Days,” Guerin’s new release has been met with critical acclaim, earning a spot on Tidal’s 50 Most Out There Jazz releases and Apple Music’s curated New Rock playlist.
Fans can catch Guerin live at The New Marigny Theatre on Friday, May 3, kicking off Jazz Fest season with a show promising to be a masterclass in orchestrated bass opus. For those who haven’t had the chance to catch a show at this beautiful new venue, this will be a wonderful opportunity to do so. Tickets are available here.
Guerin’s journey to this moment has been marked by a lifelong dedication to his craft and a series of transformative experiences. Drawing inspiration from his years as the music director for Dr. John and bassist for Allen Toussaint, Guerin has honed his signature bass grooves, infusing them with the soulful essence of New Orleans.
“I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best in the industry,” Guerin reflects. “Allen Toussaint was my mentor in songwriting and arranging, alongside Alvin Batiste and Dr. John, who I had the privilege of serving as music director.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Guerin has graced stages around the world with world-class bands, from Alvin Batiste’s Jazztronauts to The Marcus Roberts Trio, to collaborations with guitar legend Paul Gilbert and most recently, Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band. His genre-defying sound, Prog:Funk, made its debut on WWOZ-FM and received an electrifying reception at his showcase at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation earlier this year.
In addition to his studio endeavors, Guerin keeps his bass chops sharp through relentless touring. His 2024 itinerary has included a successful tour of Finland, with more exciting performances on the horizon.
In addition to the upcoming performance at The New Marigny Theatre on Friday, May 3, Guerin will be performing with the Allen Toussaint Orchestra at the Mahalia Jackson Theater on April 20, and at the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival with Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band on June 16.
