Roland Guerin stands on the edge of a new time in new song “Hickery Dickery”

While stuck inside his home during quarantine, bassist and singer-songwriter Roland Guerin penned “Hickery Dickery,” for which he has now released a lyric video.

Described as a “clear-eyed look at our times,” the song is a digital release preceded by Guerin’s latest album Grass Roots, released by Louisiana Red Hot Records earlier this year. Anchored in optimism and reflection, “Hickery Dickery” is Guerin’s take on how the COVID-19 pandemic has left us “feeling the ramifications of a silly nation” and reminding us that “we’re on the edge of a new time.”

Before the pandemic effectively shuttered the music industry as it once stood, Guerin celebrated the release of Grass Roots at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, where he was interviewed by curator David Kunian. Prior to that, Guerin — who spent much of his career performing as a member of the late Allen Toussaint’s band and serving as bassist and musical director for Dr. John — was enjoying success as a globally touring solo musician.

He continues to remain inspired by the time he spent with Toussaint and Dr. John, particularly as it relates to his own songwriting. “Allen Toussaint and Dr John always wrote about inspired truthful things and instances. A year ago, an older gentleman told me that when he was growing up, he and his peers looked to the musicians to find direction in what was happening in the world, and looked to them for inspiration… he then looked me straight in my eyes and asked: ‘What are you gonna do?’ I responded, “It may not be as widely known, but I’m doing it.”
