Bounce music pioneer Ricky B and contemporary funk trombonist Corey Henry headline what will be an eclectic mix at the fifth annual Bye-Bye Hurricane Season party this Saturday, December 7 at the Howlin’ Wolf. The Evacuteer.org fundraiser moves to the big room at the Howlin’ Wolf this year, having outgrown its old venue, and continuing to grow its mission for awareness of hurricane evacuation preparedness in greater New Orleans. OffBeat is giving away a pair of tickets to this shindig. To enter to win, simply fill out the form below. The winner will be notified at 5:00 p.m. today.
Though the 2013 hurricane season was one of the slowest in record in recent years, the non-profit Evacuteer organization announced its tremendous progress this year installing the city’s EvacuSpots, marking each hurricane evacuation pick-up location with 14-foot steel sculptures (Learn more about the EvacuSpots on the Evacuteer website’s interactive map here). In addition to executing this unique community service project that combines public art with public safety, the group also registered and trained 546 active Evacuteers — volunteers trained to specialize in facilitating the safe and efficient evacuation of New Orleans in the event of a hurricane.
To celebrate not only the close of an uneventful hurricane season, but the tremendous accomplishments of the organization this year as well, Evacuteer expands their annual benefit party with more music, more fun and more folks. The Essentials will open the evening’s musical performances at 8 p.m., setting the stage for a rare appearance by bounce artist Ricky B. After an 11:30 p.m. champagne toast with a surprise celebrity guest, Corey Henry and the Tremé Funktet will bring the party on home.
Perhaps the highlight of the Bye-Bye Hurricane Season Celebration though will be WWNO’s pop-up Listening Post Saturday night at the Howlin’ Wolf. This mini-broadcasting station will provide guests with the opportunity to have their voices heard on hurricane preparedness issues in New Orleans through the local community radio channel. The Evacuteers certainly know how to weave purpose into a party.
A silent auction has also been added to this year’s Bye-Bye program, featuring framed photographs of some of the EvacuSpot sculpture by photographer James Shaw.
The 5th Annual Evacuteer Bye-Bye Hurricane Season Celebration takes place Saturday, December 7 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Howlin’ Wolf (907 S. Peters St). In honor of the year 2013 and the 13 storms logged in the Atlantic, Evacuteer is offering advance tickets for just $13 from their event webpage here. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $20. Proceeds will benefit the Evacuteer.org non-profit organization’s hurricane evacuation preparedness programs. More Info: www.evacuteer.org.
