Rickie Lee Jones, two-time Grammy Award winner and musician, is making her way out to New Orleans’ Tipitina’s to celebrate her upcoming album release, KICKS. She will launch her U.S. tour by performing in New Orleans as her first location on Saturday, June 1, 2019.
KICKS will be released June 7 and embodies pop, rock and jazz spanning over the decades from the 50s to the 70s. Created entirely in New Orleans, KICKS features local talent, mixers and studios and is produced by Jones herself along with her bandmate, Mike Dillon.
Despite being a Chicago native, Jones has worked with local New Orleans talent before. Teaming up with Dr. John on his album The Essentials of Dr. John, Jones was featured on track “Makin’ Whoopee.”
Jones new album includes ten songs, some showcasing traditional jazz sound with tight harmonies, while others allow Jones to rock out on the electric guitar. The various sounds blend together and form a unique and infectious selection. Track “Lonely People” was premiered from the album on April 19 and put a spin on the original Top Five Billboard hit originally recorded by America in 1974.
“As a kid I heard R&B, country, rock and the most sophisticated singer-songwriters of the day forming their genre,” Jones said. “Radio was a college education for a bidding musician because these songs are all playing on my internal radio all the time, it’s not a stretch for me to put them together on an LP,” she continued. By incorporating different radio genres, Jones has become a standout artist pushing boundaries and creating new meanings of a singer/songwriter.
OSOD (other side of desire), Jones’ own label, will release KICKS with Thirty Tigers distributing. Her team has worked with manager Ron Stone (Nirvana, Bonnie Raitt) and are putting in place a new fundraising campaign to promote Jones’ project.
