Acoustic performers Rescalla and Joshua the Bock will be performing at American Townhouse, to kick off “Mixtape: A Bi-Weekly Queer Art Collective” this Friday, October 27 6-8 p.m. Rescalla, the founder of the series, is a singer-songwriter who embarked on a musical journey from his native Rio de Janeiro to New Orleans. At 20, he ventured to the United States to pursue his passion for music and the visual arts. Beyond performing, the jazz guitarist infuses Brazilian rhythms and pop influences into his music through intricate harmonies and meticulous arrangements. Singing in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or Italian, Rescalla cites Nick Cave, Mariah Carey, Tom Jobim, Djavan, and João Gilberto as some of his main influences.
“I founded this collective to provide a welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ musicians and visual artists who, like me, have felt the need for a more inclusive performance art community in New Orleans. You don’t need to look or sound a certain way to be our friend — at Mixtape, we’ll greet you with open arms,” says Rescalla.
Joining Rescalla for the event will be Joshua the Bock, who brings “beachy vibes” and performs covers, as well as original music. The event will take place at American Townhouse, 1012 North Rampart Street, in their outdoor courtyard area. There is no cover. To learn more about Rescalla, follow him via Instagram here.
