World renowned turntablist, DJ, producer and graphic novelist Kid Koala will bring the live production of his 2003 graphic novel Nufonia Must Fall to New Orleans on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15. The multimedia performances will take place at the Contemporary Arts Center’s newly renovated industrial warehouse space.
Best known for his work with Gorillaz and and Deltron 3030, Kid Koala’s latest project finds him combining puppet theater, video, electronic instrumentation and a string quartet to bring his “tender love story about a tonedeaf robot, whose very human emotions surface in the midst of an existential quandary” to life. The production is a essentially as live silent film, with footage of puppets being edited and projected in real-time as it is scored by Kid Koala and a string quartet.
In addition to the two performances, the Contemporary Arts Center will also host a series of free events surrounding the production. On Sunday, April 9, the CAC will draw parallels to Nufonia Must Fall with a screening of Charlie Chaplin 1936 comedy classic Modern Times. The CAC will then host a conversation on comics, graphic novels and inclusivity with Kid Koala, Maria Sotter, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and LeSean Thomas on Thursday, April 13. Finally, Kid Koala will DJ a post-performance party immediately following the show on Saturday, April 15.
Tickets for Nufonia Must Fall are now on sale.
