Registration for the Irvin Mayfield School of Music Now Open

Online registration is now open for the Spring 2015 Saturday Program of the Irvin Mayfield School of Music, a popular and affordable children’s education program presented by the New Orleans Jazz Institute.

A coalition between the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and the University of New Orleans, NOJI harnesses the former’s performance expertise and the latter’s strength in jazz education.

The Irvin Mayfield School of Music was named for NOJI’s founding director and stands as an good example of the Institute’s mission to promote jazz performance and education throughout New Orleans.

The Saturday Program (formerly the Saturday Music Program) is open to kids between 8 and 17 and meets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during fall and spring semesters. It provides ensemble and small group instruction in jazz band, strings, piano, and voice, as well as lessons in jazz history, theory, and performance techniques. The program is free, but students are required to bring their own instruments.

The Summer Program (formerly Project Prodigy Summer Music Camp) is a more condensed program designed for kids in the 4th through 8th grades. More information will be provided as the registration date approaches.
