The Red Hot Chili Peppers will fill perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Sunday, May 1, closing out the Festival Stage for the day in a spot formerly scheduled for the Foo Fighters, who canceled their show following the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers last performed at Jazz Fest in 2016. The group hass soundtracked successive generations as not only one of the bestselling acts in music history, but also one of the biggest streaming rock bands in the world today. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, the award-winning Los Angeles quartet—Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Flea (bass), Chad Smith (drums), and John Frusciante (guitar)—have amassed six Grammy Awards, sold 80 million albums, generated five billion YouTube views, and gathered 22 billion Spotify streams, averaging 21 million monthly listeners on the platform. The band released their twelfth studio album, Unlimited Love (Warner Records), on April 1.
In 2017 the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at the Smoothie King Center, joined by the Rebirth Brass Band, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, and George Porter Jr.
Another act has been replaced at Jazz Fest on the Congo Square Stage. Busta Rhymes will close the stage on Friday, May 6, replacing Ludacris.
Hawkins died on March 25 at age 50 in Bogotá, Colombia, while the Foo Fighters were on tour in South America. The Office of the Attorney General of Colombia announced that a preliminary toxicology test on Hawkins found substances including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.
