Record Store Day, an annual event inaugurated in 2007 and held on one Saturday every April and every Black Friday in November to “celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store” falls Saturday, April 22 this year. In order to celebrate, Strange Daisy and Community Records will present an evening with Community, the New Orleans-based band that re-united for the first time in almost 20 years last year. Community Records, started in 2008, is the DIY-local label that has released music from over 100 acts, including Delores Galore, Caddywhompus, and Bad Operation.
Records will be available not only from the label that launched Donovan Wolfington, but also from Strange Daisy, Full Tilt, and Sisters in Christ Record Store. The work of artists Brent Houzenga, Cassie Tarr, Kevin Comarda, Nymphadora Flames, and Lillian Aguinaga will also be on display. The all ages show will open with Metronome the City. (From the band’s page: “Metronome The City was formed over 20 years ago in New Orleans. The band consists of bass, drums, guitars, keys. They also use radio frequencies, theremin, voices, glass and the occasional can of WD-40. They are influenced by our metropolis’ soundtrack and have intertwined the acts of chase and retreat into instrumental voyages that may have trace elements of area code 504, dusted with cosmic debris and caked with shrapnel. End Transmission is the outfit’s fourth album and was recorded between 2020-2021 during the pandemic.”)
The event will take place Saturday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at The Broadside, 600 N. Broad Street. Tickets are $10 in advance via broadsidenola.com and $15 at the door.
Fans of the Community Records roster should stay tuned for the label’s 15th anniversary party to be held at Tipitina’s on June 23. Featuring FATTER THAN ALBERT (Reunion), Caddywhompus, We Are The Union, Catbite, Kill Lincoln, Bad Operation, Delores Galore, BRAT, Joystick, Sharks’ Teeth, and more. Tickets start at $35.
