On Saturday, July 23, the New Orleans Record raid will return for its Summer installment. This time around the Raid will be held in the Marigny at both the Hi-Ho Lounge and Siberia. Twenty-something vendors, made up of public and private sellers from various locations across the country, will gather to trade and sell second-hand vinyl in order to increase an appreciation for recycled records, hoping ultimately to create a greater awareness of music cultural history.
“Through record collecting, I found out about American history and the American mindset. In New Orleans we celebrate our culture a lot, but many of the people that live here aren’t even able to name ten historical jazz musicians,” says Hunter King, the Record Raid’s chief organizer since it’s initiation. “I just want to introduce as many people as possible to this culture because it’s something I’ve benefited from. I want to make this culture as accessible as possible to people.”
The Record Raid, which initially evolved out of the WTUL record fair, will enjoy several improvements this time around. In addition to the cool air-conditioning that the Hi-Ho Lounge and Siberia will offer, this Record Raid will also offer the option to “sip while you flip,” and actual live DJ performances, giving many DJs the opportunity to show off their personal collections.
King admits that record collecting is mostly about “finding something very unique,” and if you’re a vinyl fanatic or just interested in learning more about the culture surrounding record collecting, don’t miss this event.
The Record Raid goes from noon to 6 p.m. For more information, visit them on Facebook.
