In the middle of a tour that will take him on over 20 different stages throughout the country, the Grammy-winning Ray LaMontagne will play the Saenger Theatre on Monday, October 27, at 7:30 p.m.
The singer-songwriter’s latest album, Supernova, features LaMontagne moving away from the raspy folk-blues style that always recalled Nick Drake or Tim Buckley in favor of beautiful aerial ballads.
For this fifth album, LaMontagne has enlisted Black Keys guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach to produce what stands as the artist’s freshest work to date.
In a midst of a joyful combination of electric guitar, organs, glockenspiels and background vocals, LaMontagne’s voice is smooth, light and clear. The lyrics are peaceful, and they all seem to be imprinted with lighthearted nostalgia. “Free to play, as a child we ran / Through fields of clover / Underneath the sun” the singer sings in the colorful opening Lavender.
As surprising at it may sounds, the whole album is on the edge of psychedelic-pop, conveying a constant spirit of lightness and simplicity echoing The Zombies or the more recent Tame Impala. The arrangements are spacious, floating, yet beat-driven, grooving and never too loose.
On stage, Ray LaMontagne is sure to deliver an energetic show, presenting his latest tunes along with a band aligned specifically for the tour that will give the singer the opportunity to present his work in a new way.
“They give me a chance to play more electric guitar, which I love to do,” LaMontagne said in a press release. “I’m really looking forward to being able to set the acoustic down for half the set. That will be a nice feeling.”
Tickets for the show range from $45 to $65, and are on sale now.
