‘Purple Takeover New Orleans’ to Honor Pop Icon Prince: DJ Soul Sister Returns

Tipitina’s will host a “Purple Takeover” to celebrate the birthday of the late, great pop icon Prince. The event will run all weekend from June 3 to 7. Purple Takeover New Orleans is presented by DJ Soul Sister,  who will return once again to Tipitina’s for another one of her curated nights. The internationally known DJ has become a New Orleans music scene’s mainstay with her show “Soul Power” on WWOZ and has won “Best DJ” in the Best of The Beat Awards countless times. She is known as a true “crate digger” who unearths vinyls that have been forgotten or ignored.

Along with radio appearances, she also has a history of throwing parties like her first event in 1997, the “HUSTLE!” party, which led to her rise as one of the most notable DJ artists in the city. Since then, she has hosted many events around the city, including her yearly birthday party. The upcoming Tipitina’s event is her sixth time hosting “Purple Takeover.” As DJ Soul Sister says in her Facebook announcement, these events not only serve the purpose of celebrating Prince’s musical legacy but also his philanthropy, citing Prince’s selfless and often secret contributions to nonprofits. In this vein, some proceeds will be donated to Hagar’s House, a sanctuary for women, children, trans and gender-nonconforming folks that provides an open and empowering residential community in New Orleans.

The show is for 18 and up; doors open at 9:00 p.m., and the show begins at 10:00 p.m. Tickets cost 25$.
