On Saturday, October 14, New Orleans will host a Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico fundraiser concert after the island was decimated by Hurricane Maria. Live music, burlesque, comedy and a raffle will be features of the evening. There will even be face painting, tarot reading and Food from Fatmas Cozy Corner, Little Korea BBQ, and Jimi Hubbard’s award-winning chili.
Delish Da Goddess, TUFF LUVS, Kay Weathers and BateBunda will provide the music for Steppin’ Up for the South. The party will also include comedy performances hosted by Laura Sanders and featuring Isaac Kozell, Geneva Joy Hughes, Katie East, Alex Luchun and Dane Faucheux. Satyne Wynterz, Bellagio Showers, Grand Mafun, Xena Zeit-Geist, Lefty Lucy and Phoniex.
A silent auction raffle featuring locally made goods and services from Juan’s Flying Burrito, Crescent City Comics, Blue Cypress Books, Fifi Mahony’s, Nobs Bikes/Boards, New Orleans Museum of Art, Fry and Pie, Dodeca Designs and many more will be the icing on the cake.
The event is organized by a small committed collective of New Orleans women: Justine Woods, Jessica Keli Govea, Adriana Klassen-Cox , Emily Vega, Amelia Hoppe, Michelle Hein, Aiden Gibson, Caitlin Morgenstern and Laura Sanders who saw the need and jumped at the opportunity to help. Proceeds will be donated to on-the -ground groups Colectiva Feminista en Construcción in Puerto Rico and Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. Admission to the event is on a siding scale of $5-$10 entry, but kids get in free and are welcome to hang out outside, but only those 18 and older will be able to hang in the stage area.
Steppin Up for the South begins at 12p.m. at Poor Boys Bar, 1328 St. Bernard Avenue.
