Preservation Hall Jazz Band Have a Ball with Surprise Guests

Saturday night turned into one hell of a party as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band welcomed a number of friends for their second annual Preservation Hall Ball. The celebration, which took place at the Civic Theatre, saw the legendary New Orleans ensemble team up with previously announced collaborators, as well as a variety of surprise performers.

Announced guests included the young Original Pinettes Brass Band, coonsumate bluesman Deacon John Moore, members the Afghan Whigs, saxophonist/electronic artist GRiZ, Living Colour singer Corey Glover, Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville and neo-soul pioneer Meshell Ndegeocello. The night also featured a few surprise collaborators such as Stanton Moore and Robert Mercurio of Galactic and avante-garde indie artists Arc Iris.

The nearly four hour concert saw the Preservation Hall Jazz Band deliver plenty of original material on their own, while myriad guest performers joined them for a series of covers throughout the night. Standout collaborations included Ndegeocello and Neville on James Brown’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud,” Glover, Moore and Mercurio on Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” and the jazz standard “St. James Infirmary,” The Afghan Whigs’ Gregg Dulli, Rick Nelson and Dave Rosser on Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama, an experimental jam with Arc Iris and Dulli/Glover sharing vocal duties for Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.”
