OffBeat is excited to premiere “Feel My,” a single from up-and-coming New Orleans outfit Miss Mojo’s forthcoming EP.
Miss Mojo mixed funk and soul with pop-like lyrics and melodies to create an array of songs for their new six-track release, which is slated to drop sometime in January. The group’s name is a reflection of the femininity of the two female leads, whose sass embodies the band.
While many of the band’s members have played together for two years, the current eight-member lineup—Jenna Winston (vocals), Piper Browne (vocals), Cody Greenstein (rhythm guitar), Rob Kellner (keys), Leo Skovron (bass), Mack Major (drummer), Ashton Hines (trumpet) and Jeremy Phipps (trombone)—came together in January 2016.
With the exceptions of New Orleans natives Hines and Phipps, all of Miss Mojo’s members are current or former Tulane students.
Greenstein brought the the riff and chord changes for “Feel My” to the band and the rest came naturally.
“We basically were just grooving on it and then Piper started singing some melodic ideas, and then she put some lyrics to it and it came out and we were happy with the result. It wasn’t a long, thought-out process. It just kind of happened spontaneously,” said Major.
The group recorded their new album at Neptune Studio in Destin, Florida with Donnie Sundal from Boukou Groove. Recording the six tracks only took three days, but Miss Mojo will wait until January to release the album.
“We pay attention to song form and we try to have cohesive and focused ideas with our songs, but at the end of the day it’s all about playing something that makes us feel good and makes the audience feel good. Anybody that enjoys live music, enjoys a horn section, enjoys solid grooves and nice melodies, hopefully will enjoy our music,” said Major.
