For the tenth incarnation of the Ponderosa Stomp, organizer Ira “Dr. Ike” Padnos and his crew brought back many favorite performers of Stomps past, including an Allen Toussaint-led set of classic New Orleans R&B singers, billed as a tribute to Cosimo Matassa, that morphed into a remembrance of the recently deceased Wardell Quezergue. Record collectors and the generally-music-obsessed again came from around the world for a weekend that included the Hip Drop all-45s dance party, Clandestine Celluloid film series, seminars on various Stomp performers and related artists, a record show, and two nights of concerts.
The Stomp culminated Saturday night with a tribute to Stax and Hi Records that featured Memphis singers Sir Mack Rice, Otis Clay, Eddie Floyd, and William Bell backed by Memphis soul-revival band the Bo-Keys. The band was beefed up by Howard Grimes on drums and Archie Turner on keyboards, both of whom played on frequent recording sessions at Hi Records, the Bar-Kays’ Ben Cauley—only survivor of the plane crash that killed Otis Redding—on trumpet, and on guitar, Charles “Skip” Pitts, who played with Isaac Hayes and is best known for his work on the classic “Theme from Shaft”.
