This year’s Mempho Music Festival, which has taken place in Memphis, Tennessee since its start in 2017, is featuring a few well-known artists from Louisiana on its lineup.
The Revivalists, a blues-rock band who formed in New Orleans in 2007, will play at Mempho, riding the success of their fourth studio album, Take Good Care, which the band released in Nov. 2018. Following the success of their third album, Men Amongst Mountains, which featured the hit song “Wish I Knew You,” The Revivalists stepped up the production on their most recent album, with two high-spirited singles, “All My Friends” and “Change,” both seeking to replace “Wish I Knew You” as The Revivalists’ number one song.
PJ Morton– the R&B singer-songwriter who won a GRAMMY for his album Gumbo Unplugged–is also playing at Mempho. Though Morton explores New Orleans in his music quite often, Gumbo was the first album he recorded in the city (Unplugged was a live version recorded elsewhere). It marked the end of Morton’s 13 year hiatus away from his hometown. With a busy solo-career and an active job as Maroon 5’s keyboardist, PJ Morton is a musician in high demand.
Also playing at Mempho is Marcella Simien, whose band Marcella & Her Lovers blends Memphis soul and New Orleans funk. She grew up in St. Landry Parish before attending college in Memphis. With strong roots in Louisiana music–her father, Terrance Simien, won a GRAMMY for his zydeco music–Marcella Simien is sure to stand out at the Memphis-based music festival.
The Mempho Music festival is taking place on October 19 and 20 at Shelby Farms Park, one of the largest urban parks in America. For more information, including tickets, click here.
