A number of talented New Orleans musicians sat as nominees at the Grammy Awards last night, including Tank and the Bangas, who were nominated for Best New Artist. The only artist to take home an award, however, was St. Augustine High School graduate PJ Morton, who is the keyboardist in Maroon 5 as well as an acclaimed solo musician, songwriter and producer. He took home the award for “Say So,” which won Best R&B Song and features JoJo. This is Morton’s second Grammy win, receiving the award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his song “How Deep Is Your Love” at last year’s Grammy Awards.
PJ Morton has achieved massive success in his career thus far. In 2010, he joined Maroon 5 as a member of their touring band, officially joining the group in 2012. In March 2012, he released his debut solo EP, Following My Mind First, under the Young Money label. Morton went on to release his first major-label album, New Orleans, in 2013. His first self-released studio album, Gumbo, earned Morton two Grammy Award nominations in 2018. In 2019, Morton took home the award for Best Traditional R&B Performance in addition to receiving two other nominations at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
