Yeah you right! New Orleans luminaries PJ Morton and Ledisi have been nominated for Best R&B Album for Gumbo and Let Love Rule, respectively.
Morton (who is already a Grammy winner for his collaborative work) is a soul-pop singer, songwriter and producer who’s been a keyboardist with pop-rock band Maroon 5 since 2010 released the LP in April and at the time of its release, he told OffBeat the album signaled a departure of sorts for him. “I usually focus on love and relationships,” he told John Wirt. “But this time I want to reflect the times. There’s a lot going on in the world—racial tension and a lot of division in general. I’m touching on a lot of different things. And that’s a gumbo thing.” Morton is also nominated for Best R&B Song for “First Began.”
Nine-time Grammy nominee Ledisi’s Let Love Rule, which OffBeat‘s Geraldine Wyckoff says “succeeds because of Ledisi herself,” was released in September
Other nominees in the Best R&B Album category are Daniel Caesar’s Freudian, Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic and Musiq Soulchild’s Feel The Real.
The Lost Bayou Ramblers are nominated for Best Regional Roots Music Album for Kalenda, of which OffBeat‘s Brett Milano said “Not since Dr. John’s storied debut—which coincidentally also included a piece based on the Kalenda legend—have Louisiana traditions been so thoroughly psychedelicized.”
Louisiana musicians represented elsewhere include Shreveport’s John Beasley for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album (MONK’estra Vol. 2); and Lafayette’s Dwayne Dopsie And The Zydeco Hellraisers for Best Regional Roots Music Album (for Top Of The Mountain). Randy Newmann is also a notable inclusion, as are Sonny Landreth (for Recorded Live in Lafayette) and Bobby Rush (for a remix of “Funk O’ De Funk”).
