PJ Morton champions economic ownership in “Buy Back the Block”

Grammy Award-winning artist PJ Morton recently released the official music video for his song “Buy Back The Block,” reminding listeners to back the Black dollar and encouraging Black people in their communities to regain ownership of their neighborhoods. In homage of the late Los Angeles rapper Nipsey Hussle, who continually put money back into his community, Morton uses the song to carry a motivational message while outreaching to New Orleanians in need.

The video, directed by Dominic Scott, shows Morton and his daughter Peyton as they donate $500 to community members in financial need due to the pandemic. The video involves families who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, including a recent college graduate responsible for her family’s medical expenses, a single father of twins, a couple with a newborn, as well as an elderly couple whose home is nearing foreclosure.

“Buy Back The Block,” featured on the triple Grammy-nominated album PAUL album from PJ Morton, seeks to spark a greater dialogue around “banking Black and understanding the more we invest in those banks, the more they can loan to people like us,” as he explains in an interview with NPR. The message behind the song initiated a collaboration with Black-owned Liberty Bank, who assisted with touring efforts and with the production of the music video.

PJ Morton’s at-home creations have not fallen short. Earlier this month, he released a new single titled “I Can’t Wait,” inspired by those at home missing someone they cannot be with at this time. Additionally, Morton received a BET Award nomination for his song “All In His Plan” (feat. Le’Andria Johnson and Mary Mary), which currently holds a spot in the Top 10 National Gospel Airplay Charts.
