Internationally renowned pianist, composer and bandleader Michael Wolff is set to perform at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro on Saturday, November 23rd. Known for his charismatic style and masterful touch on the piano, Wolff will be joined by his acclaimed trio, featuring bassist Ben Allison and drummer Allan Mednard, for two performances at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Wolff’s return to New Orleans offers audiences a live experience of selections from his latest album, Memoir, recently released on Sunnyside Records. The album, his first in four years, has garnered praise for its deep emotional resonance and the personal journey it reflects, celebrating Wolff’s extraordinary survival and perseverance through both his artistic and personal challenges. Alongside the trio’s original compositions, the evening will also feature interpretations of beloved jazz standards.
Best known to mainstream audiences as the musical director and bandleader on The Arsenio Hall Show, Wolff has performed with a constellation of jazz luminaries, including Sonny Rollins, Nancy Wilson, Herbie Hancock, and the Count Basie Orchestra.
Memoir, described by Wolff as a deeply personal album, mirrors the themes explored in his Amazon best-selling autobiography, On That Note: A Memoir of Jazz, Tics, and Survival. The book details Wolff’s journey through jazz, his four-year battle with a rare, misdiagnosed cancer, and his lifelong management of Tourette’s Syndrome. These experiences have shaped his music into what he describes as “a reflection of a journey, with each note carrying its own emotional weight.”
Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, located at 626 Frenchmen Street, provides an intimate setting for Wolff and his trio to share this musical journey. Tickets for the show are priced at $40 and can be purchased at Snug Harbor’s website here.
