The Rooster Walk music festival in southern Virginia is in its 8th year, and has an eclectic mix of music, starting with blue grass and Americana. But as the day wore on the bill turned to a New Orleans flavor when Naughty Professor, Tab Benoit and The Revivalists took over.
Naughty Professor brought its brand of super tight jazz fusion instrumentals to the VIP stage, which backed up to a lake in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The band was in the midst of a three week tour which had their closely constructed arrangements sounding like one voice from six people.
Tab Benoit delivered a dazzling blues set with veteran drummer Terence Higgins and long time bassist Cory Duplechin, ranging through all manner of blues styles, leaving the crowd buzzing.
The Revivalists played a brilliant set for a mix of their own faithful “Rev Heads” and plenty of new comers. Their set, and for that matter the Saturday of the Rooster Walk 8 schedule, peaked when the Naughty Professor horns and Neko Williams, drummer for the Peoples’ Blues of Richmond joined them onstage for an extended jam that infused even more energy into an already smoking set.
