On Saturday, August 17, Tipitina’s and Hennessy presented the third edition of the new Uptown Saturday Night summer series. The USN shows seem to be bringing urban alternative music back to Tips on a monthly basis – from brass-funk and R&B to “neo” soul, afro-punk and hip-hop, local artists on the rise in these genres have been making debuts on the legendary New Orleans stage this summer alongside DJs, new and staple. The August installment featured rising New Orleans afro-rock band, The Honorable South plus soul-jazz singer Mykia Jovan with experimental electro-keyboardist Jeff Pagano and DJ RQaway. Each edition also features a local visual artist who paints the featured performers live. This month’s painter was Reuben Cheatem, who captured both bands in his own trademark style.
Contributing intern photographer, Sierra Hudson was there to capture the (glowing) vibe.
