The 60th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, held August 1-3 at Fort Adams State Park and the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport Casino, included numerous New Orleans musicians.
Jonathan Batiste and Stay Human closed the Friday daytime events at Fort Adams, joined for a couple of tunes by alto saxophonist Grace Kelly. Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue closed Saturday’s main stage with a high-octane performance not marred by the day’s torrential rains.
Dr. John’s scheduled mid-afternoon set on Sunday was cancelled because of his bout with the flu, and, unfortunately for all in attendance, Allen Toussaint came to listen and soak up the Newport Jazz Festival as a listener, not a performer.
