Friday Cheers, an outdoor concert series in Richmond, Virginia, celebrated its 30th anniversary at Brown’s Island with the Funky Meters on Friday, June 13, 2014.
Rain and wind of Biblical proportions that threatened to cancel the night lasted well past the scheduled start time. But in something of a “Funky Miracle,” the skies cleared and there was just enough time in between storms to fit the Meters in.
The crowd grew to a surprising size, considering the weather, and they were treated to Meters classics “Fire on the Bayou,” “Soul Island,” “People Say,” and a Cissy Strut/Look-Ka Py Py mash up.
The Funky Meters also rolled out a nice selection of covers, including the Booker T and the MGs song “Hang ‘Em High” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child.”
