Percy J is a brand new outfit that came together through a need “to create a new sound with a new beat, whilst also paying tribute to the old school funk and soul greats.” The band members, who are all born-and-raised New Orleanians, describes themselves as “well dressed and heavily compressed,” touching on their unique appearance as well as their anomalous take on melodic structure and New Orleans classics.
Percy J consists of Lenny Green on vocals, Devin Kerrigan on bass, Paul Provosty on keys and guitar, Jeff Jani on drums and Logan Sellers on guitar and keys. All musicians have been steadily active in the thriving New Orleans music scene even before the formation of Percy J, and have worked with the likes of Earphunk, Gravity A, Renard Poche Band, Corey Henry and Mike Bass, just to name a few. They have also graced well-known festival stages such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
Now, the members of Percy J are collectively putting their skills and talents to the forefront and are currently recording their debut LP, to be released this summer. The LP is expected to be indicative of what makes the band so unusual and fresh, with elements of soul, funk, and R&B. The band’s debut video single, “Better Man” has reached close to 10,000 views, an achievement reached before their first live show as a group at One Eyed Jacks, this past December.
Percy J begins carnival season with their Wednesday night dance party at The Maple Leaf. This weekly residency will be held every Wednesday in February (7th, 14th, 21st and 28th), with doors opening at 10 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
