PBS to Premiere New Fats Domino Documentary

PBS will broadcast a documentary on Fats Domino, one of New Orleans’ most beloved musical icons, next month.

The one-hour piece, titled “Fats Domino and the Birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” will premiere on Friday, February 26 in honor of the popular music pioneer’s 88th birthday. It will be presented by the critically-acclaimed PBS series American Masters.

IndieWire reports that the documentary will look at how Fats Domino’s New Orleans rhythm and blues style transformed into rock and roll, a new musical genre that appealed to both black and white audiences.

“He [Domino] had four major riots at his shows partly because of integration,” Fats Domino biographer Rick Coleman told the publication. “But also the fact they had alcohol at these shows. So they were mixing alcohol, plus dancing, plus the races together for the first time in a lot of these places.”

The film includes a number of interviews with Fats Domino collaborators like producer/songwriter/bandleader Dave Batholomew, legendary studio owner/engineer/producer Cosimo Matassa (who passed away in 2014), saxophonist Herb Hardesty, among others. It also feaures narration from Treme and The Wire actor Clarke Peters.

American Masters presents Fats Domino and The Birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll wil premiere at 10pm ET/9pm CT on PBS on Friday, February 26.
