Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon is set to embark on “A Quiet Celebration Tour,” a U.S. tour this spring and summer that will feature the live debut of his Grammy-nominated album Seven Psalms alongside performances of his iconic classics, according to a press release.
The tour, which kicks off on April 4 in New Orleans and concludes in August in Seattle, marks Simon’s return to the stage after facing significant hearing loss in his left ear over the past few years. Simon will perform in intimate venues selected for their optimal acoustics, a decision made with his hearing condition in mind.
Simon began experiencing hearing loss during the recording of Seven Psalms, as detailed in the documentary In Restless Dreams. The condition initially made extended live performances impossible. However, working in collaboration with the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss and his production team, Simon reconfigured his stage setup to accommodate his needs. Changes included moving monitors to surround him, as discussed in a recent appearance on CBS Mornings.
Driven by a desire to bring Seven Psalms to life on stage, Simon devised new arrangements for both the album and his beloved classics. Seven Psalms, recorded exclusively with acoustic instruments and primarily performed by Simon himself, is structured as a continuous piece in seven movements. Simon has expressed that he views the listener as completing the song, and the tour aims to enhance that interactive experience in a live setting.
The band accompanying Simon on tour will include Caleb Burhans (viola), Jamey Haddad (percussion), Gyan Riley (guitar), Mick Rossi (piano, keys), Andy Snitzer (saxophone), Nancy Stagnita (flute), Mark Stewart (guitar), and Eugene Friesen (cello). Drummers Steve Gadd and Matt Chamberlin will alternate throughout the tour.
Paul Simon tickets go on sale Friday, February 21, at 10 a.m. local time through SaengerNola.com and PaulSimon.com.
