Pat Casey and Ricky Sebastian & Company will return to Snug Harbor with a tribute to Jaco Pastorius on Thursday, December 1 at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
John “Jaco” Pastorius III was an American bassist, composer and producer well known for his involvement in the jazz fusion movement of the 1970s and 1980s as an electric bass virtuoso. He recorded as a solo artist and a member of the renowned band Weather Report (1976 – 1981). He also collaborated with artists such as Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell.
Though he passed away at the young age of 35 and therefore had a relatively short career of around 15 years, Jaco is still regarded today as one of the best bassists of all time, specifically of the electric bass. His playing style incorporated funk, lyrical solos, bass chords and innovative harmonics. More than just a technical master of his instrument, his musicianship propelled his compositions to new heights and directions.
Jaco’s approach to the bass and the music he wrote continued to inspire many musicians and listeners alike. He’s left a mark on many, including some New Orleans musicians like Louisiana native drummer Ricky Sebastian who played drums with Jaco for several years, and New Orleans-based bassist Pat Casey. Casey has been so influenced by Jaco’s craft that he began hosting annual tribute concerts to the late bass master in 2016, nearly 30 years after his death.
New Orleans bassist Pat Casey has played on Frenchmen Street and other parts of the city for many years. He’s played a variety of genre styles, such as gospel and funk for bands such as Da Lovebirds (with his wife, vocalist Robin Barnes), Pat Casey and the New Sound, among others. Ricky Sebastian is a local drummer and music instructor at the University of New Orleans who has also performed with artists like Dr. John, Ellis Marsalis and George Porter.
