Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus Christ in the 2004 film The Passion of the Christ, will reign as Bacchus in 2017. In keeping with tradition, the “super krewe” will roll Uptown on February 26, the Sunday before Fat Tuesday.
Caviezel has appeared in a number of films—including The Thin Red Line, The Count of Monte Cristo and Frequency and the New Orleans-shot Deja Vu—since his acting career began in 1991. He also starred in the CBS crime drama Person interest, which wrapped up in June after five seasons.
Caviezel will reign as Bacchus XLIX, making him the 49th monarch to lead the parade. Previous Bacchus royals have included Bob Hope, Nicolas Cage, Ron Howard, Harry Connick Jr. and the late actor Alan Thicke, who passed away last week.
The 2017 edition of Bacchus will honor the New Orleans’ Saints’ 50th season with 21 Saints-themed floats. Additionally, the parade will once again feature popular “animated superfloats” like the Baccha-Whopper and the Bacchasaurus.
