Community Visions Unlimited (CVU) is holding a Metro New Orleans Street Gallery “miniature art box auction” on Friday, September 29 from 6-10 p.m. at The New Orleans Yacht Club, where attendees will have an opportunity to meet the artists behind the city’s uniquely designed utility boxes.
It’s also a chance to help the organization behind the citywide project raise funds by doing some holiday shopping through bidding on a mini box. These minis are small replicas of the big utility boxes that have been painted by New Orleans artists over the past year. They are one of a kind keepsakes because they are only done once.
CVU has completed 157 boxes to date. Neighborhoods so far include: Algiers, Uptown, Lakeview, Broad Street Corridor, Mid-City, 7th Ward, Gert town, Gentilly, New Orleans East, Carrollton, Bio-Medical, Downtown, Claiborne corridor and now Metairie, Kenner and St. Bernard. Bidding on these special pieces of art will ensure CVU’s ability to expand the art project into new areas.
CVU is also working on a book about the boxes that will include a brief history of each neighborhood, pictures of boxes and bio of each artist. This will be used to help CVU promote the many culturally rich neighborhoods of Metro New Orleans.
